Newbie

Monah Baki-2
Hi All,

I'm new to postfix and I'm running postfix 2.4.6, currently I can
receive email from certain domains and from other domains (i.e
gmail.com, guru.com), I cannot. I did a tail on the mail.log and saw
the following

postfix/smtpd[1110]: timeout after EHLO from yw-out-1718.google.com
[74.125.46.158]

My postconf -n

command_directory = /usr/local/sbin
config_directory = /usr/local/etc/postfix
daemon_directory = /usr/local/libexec/postfix
debug_peer_level = 2
html_directory = no
mailbox_size_limit = 500000000
mailq_path = /usr/local/bin/mailq
manpage_directory = /usr/local/man
mydestination = $mydomain
mydomain = $myhostname
mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8 192.168.3.0/24 67.100.188.208
mynetworks_style = host
myorigin = $mydomain
newaliases_path = /usr/local/bin/newaliases
readme_directory = no
sample_directory = /usr/local/etc/postfix
sendmail_path = /usr/local/sbin/sendmail
setgid_group = maildrop
smtp_always_send_ehlo = no
smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_mynetworks,
reject_unauth_destination, check_sender_access hash:/usr/local/etc/
postfix/sender_access
unknown_local_recipient_reject_code = 550
virtual_alias_domains = webnocent.com vixaroy.com whywire.com
virtual_alias_maps = hash:/usr/local/etc/postfix/virtual

Hope someone can shed some light as to why my server is behaving like
this.

Thank you

Please show an unaltered log of an entire transaction.
Please read http://www.postfix.org/DEBUG_README.html and pay attention
to the logging section.

My test connection fails on EHLO to your MX but HELO is fine.

Hi all,

Tried all combinations "yes" and "no" and even deleted from my main.cf the
following

smtpd_helo_required = yes
smtp_always_send_ehlo = yes

I still cannot receive email from gmail.com and guru.com

Still get "timeout after EHLO from yw-out-1718.google.com[74.125.46.157]"
and "timeout after EHLO from mail3.guru.com[216.151.125.108]"

This is really frustrating

Please see my previous post.   Changing these options will have no effect.

You need to debug what the log is telling you.

This smells more like a network problem than a postfix
problem.  Record a packet dump of a failed session and post it
here, maybe that will shed some light on your problem.
http://www.postfix.org/DEBUG_README.html#sniffer
http://www.postfix.org/DEBUG_README.html#mail

Really Wild Guess That May Waste Your Time: bad smtp proxy or
firewall is screwing up PIPELINING.
http://www.postfix.org/postconf.5.html#smtpd_discard_ehlo_keywords
smtpd_discard_ehlo_keywords = pipelining, silent-discard

Please keep posts on the list.

If you must use gmail.com instead of your main, join the list with that
address as well.

Please show an unaltered log of an entire transaction.
Please read http://www.postfix.org/DEBUG_README.html and pay attention
to the logging section.

My test connection fails on EHLO to your MX but HELO is fine.

Attached is the tcpdump output, hopefully it will show why I am having
problems sending email from gmail.

My network is DSL PPPoE
My firewall is an OpenBSD 3.9 (both in/out port 25 open)
My email server is FreeBSD running postfix

Thank you

plugging the capture into Wireshark, seems google says EHLO
and your system responds, but google never acknowledges
(likely never receives) your response - your system
retransmits the response several times until finally the
connection times out.  All the while google is still waiting
patiently for your system to respond to its initial EHLO, but
finally gives up.

This isn't a postfix problem, postfix is responding correctly
and no amount of postfix tweaking will fix this. This is some
sort of a networking problem preventing your responses from
getting to google.
I'm certainly no expert, but I think your firewall is broken.

You could do a tcpdump on your firewall outside interface to
confirm no response is ever sent back to google - instead of
retransmits, I would expect to see google EHLO and then
nothing until timeout.  At any rate, seek expert advice on an
OpenBSD forum.

Thanks, it was after all a firewall problem. All working now. Thank
you so much for the great support.
